The University of Latvia Faculty of Humanities’ department of Latvian and General Linguistics and the department of Baltic Linguistics invite submissions of papers for the 48th international conference „Grammatical and Lexical system of Language, Aspects of Its Functionality and Standardization” held on March 15-16, 2012.

This conference is organized in honour of Professor Arturs Ozol’s 100-year anniversary (1912–1964) and the themes reflect the academic interests of the prominent Latvian linguist:
• grammatical system of language
• vocabulary
• history of Standard language variety
• language standardization
• teaching methodology of the native language.

Conference languages – Latvian, Lithuanian and English. Talks will be 20 minutes. Participation fee – 10 Ls (includes coffee breaks).

”Wergeland für die Welt”.
Im Zusammenhang des Wergeland-Jubiläums 2008 begannen Bjørn Alex Herrman und Tom Lotherington mit dem gleichnamigen Projekt, mit dem der Tatsache begegnet werden sollte, dass Henrik Wergeland (1808-1845) bislang in anderen Sprachen kaum zugänglich war.
Die Auswahl fiel auf Wergelands Werk Jan van Huysums Blomsterstykke (1840), das als ein Hauptwerk der nordischen Dichtung gesehen wird.Finanziert wurde das Projekt durch das Außenministerium und sein Programm NORLA (Norwegian Literature Abroad) und das offizielle Kommitée für die Feierlichkeiten zum 200. Geburtstag Wergelands 2008, das an der Nationalbibliothek ansässig war.
Das Ziel ist erreicht: Jan van Huysums Blomsterstykke liegt nun auf englisch, russisch, holländisch, deutsch und französisch vor.
Vor dem Hintergrund, dass Wergelands Werk keine große Verbreitung fand, weil er in einer der kleineren Sprachen für einen kleinen Kreis schrieb, charakterisierte der Germanist und Skandinavist Heinrich Detering Wergelands Dichtung als ”Weltliteratur, unter Ausschluss der Welt”. Anfang des Jahres kürte die lettische Akademie der Wissenschaften die wichtigsten wissenschaftlichen Forschungsergebnisse in 2011. Die Auswahl wurde aus den von Universitäten, wissenschaftlichen Institutionen und Zentren eingereichten Vorschlägen getroffen.
Für die Geisteswissenschaften wurden folgende zwei Projekte ausgewählt:

In 2011 forschten Wissenschaftler des Instituts für sozial- und poltikwissenschaftliche Forschung der Universität Lettlands über die nationale Identität und Entwicklung der lettischen Gesellschaft. Die Forschungsergebnisse wurden in dem Bericht "Übersicht über die Entwicklung der Nation 2010/2011: Nationale Identität, Mobilität und Kapazität " veröffentlicht, herausgegeben von Brigita Zepa und Evija Kļave. Der Bericht steht frei im Internet zur Verfügung: Pārskats par Tautas attīstību 2010/2011.

Margarita Barzdeviča, Doktor der Geschichtswissenschaften an dem Institut für lettische Geschichte der Universität Lettlands, forschte zur Stadtgeschichte von Riga im 17. Jahrhundert anhand von kartographischen Materialien lettischer und ausländischer Archive. Derzeit werden in einem umfassenden Projekt der schwedischen Nationalbibliothek alle von Verlagen herausgegebenen Hörbücher in der Nationalbibliographie und auch im nationalen Katalog (LIBRIS) erfasst.

On July 6–8, 2012, the National Library of Serbia in Belgrad will host the eighth International Workshop on Balto-Slavic Accentology (IWoBA VIII).

Submissions are invited for papers discussing issues in comparative and Balto-Slavic accentology, including both the prehistory and history of particular Baltio-Slavic languages, as well as dealing with dialectology (both historical and contemporary), Indo-European accentology and prosody.

Technicalities: Each presentation will last 20 minutes, followed by a 10-minute discussion. No registration fee will be charged.
Languages of the workshop: Serbian (and other Štokavian-based standard languages), Russian and other Slavic languages, as well as English.

The Doctoral Students of DFG International Research Training Group "Baltic Borderlands" are pleased to announce the Baltic Borderlands Conference 2012, taking to be place in Greifswald from 20th to 22nd of September.

From the beginning of mankind water has played an essential role by dividing and connecting different landscapes, peoples, cultures and identities. Although water has been the object of research in studies on maritime borders, dimensions of inclusion and exclusion that go beyond the mere physical character of water seem to have often been neglected.
This interdisciplinary conference intends to approach water beyond its immanent quality as a physical boundary and focuses on the character of water as a means of social, cultural, political or economic division and connection. The aim of the conference is to discuss the different roles and functions ascribed to water and what we can learn about social and mental boundaries through engaging with it.

Central topics of the conference:
- the changing meaning and functional transformation of water as barrier and bridge
- water bodies (oceans, lakes, rivers) as historical physical borders and mental boundaries
- water bodies as extra legal spaces (piracy, smuggling, human trafficking)
- water as a resource (food, fishery, agriculture)
- social and political dimensions of water as a source for conflict and cooperation
- water in culture, fine arts and religion
- the governance of water bodies and their legal status
- water and mobility (trade, transportation, tourism)

Requirements, deadlines and organizational questions:
We invite senior scholars, young researchers (recent Ph.Ds and Post-Docs) and doctoral students from the fields of Anthropology, Baltic Studies, Cultural and Area Studies, Geography, History, Literature, Political Science/International Relations, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, Theology as well as neighbouring disciplines to submit paper proposals. Tagung an der Universität Köln, 18.-­‐20. Oktober 2012
Im Zuge der literatur-­‐ und kulturwissenschaftlichen Diskussion um das Performative wurde in den letzten Jahren verstärkt der Handlungsaspekt von Literatur in den Blick genommen. Das an den Universitäten Freiburg und Köln situierte DFG-­‐Projekt „Literarische Praktiken in Skandinavien um 1900“ knüpft daran an und untersucht die vielfältigen Medialisierungen von Literatur und deren Gebrauch ebenso wie die Inszenierungen von Autoren und die performative Dimension des literarischen Feldes in einer markanten Phase der Literaturgeschichte, in der sich durch soziologische, ökonomische und mediale Umbrüche Handlungsweisen verändern und neue Praktiken etablieren. Erste Arbeitsergebnisse und eine ausführlichere theoretische Konzeptualisierung des Begriffs der ‚literarischen Praktik’ werden in einem von den Projektleitern Stephan Michael Schröder (Köln) und Joachim Grage (Freiburg) herausgegebenen Sammelband in der ersten Jahreshälfte 2012 vorgestellt.
Auf der Tagung sollen einerseits
• theoretische Konzepte der Verknüpfung von literaturwissenschaftlichen, per-­‐ formativitätsorientierten und handlungstheoretischen Ansätzen diskutiert und auf ihre Anwendbarkeit überprüft werden.
Andererseits sollen in Fallstudien einzelne Praktiken wie beispielsweise
• Formen der Lektüre und der Aufführung,
• die Verwendung von Medialisierungen von Literatur (insbesondere im Bereich der ‚neuen’ Medien um 1900),
• die (Selbst)Inszenierung von Autoren durch Ehrungen oder Gedenkfeiern,
• klassen-­‐, alters-­‐ oder geschlechtsspezifische Formen der Verwendung von Lite-­‐ ratur,
• die Rolle von Literatur in Institutionen wie Schule, Vereinen und Verbänden untersucht und zueiander in Beziehung gesetzt werden.
Im Fokus soll dabei vor allem der skandinavische Raum stehen. Beiträge zu literarischen Praktiken in anderen europäischen oder von Europa geprägten Kulturen um 1900 sind aber ebenso willkommen.

Anfang des Jahres wurde der Preis des Litauischen Schriftstellerverbandes an den Schriftsteller Andrius Jakučiūnas vergeben. Den Literaturpreis bekam Jakučiūnas für seinen letztes Jahr erschienenen Erzählungsband „Lalagė“ verliehen.
Jakučiūnas wurde 1975 in Vilnius geboren, wo er auch 2004 das Studium der klassischen Philologie an der Vilniusser Universität beendete. Er arbeitete zuerst als Litauisch- und Latein-Lehrer, bevor er sich als Künstler selbständig machte. Außer „Lalagė“ hat er schon 3 Bücher herausgegeben, welche sowohl von den Kritikern wie auch den Lesern wohlwollend aufgenommen wurden: 1999 m. erschien seine Novellensammlung „Sokrato gyvenimas arba mirtis“, 2005 der Roman „Servijaus Galo užrašai“ und 2007 der Roman „Tėvynė“.

Zweiter Workshop zur Fachgeschichte Nordeuropa-Institut • Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin 16.–18. November 2012
Dieser Workshop setzt die im Juli 2011 mit einer ersten Veranstaltung begonnene Aufarbeitung der Fachgeschichte der „Nordeuropa-Forschung“ fort. Wir wollen die Bestandsaufnahme der bisher geleisteten Forschung erweitern und weitere Desiderate identifizieren. Es sollen auch prinzipielle Fragen und Probleme der Fachgeschichte besprochen werden, u.a. in Hinblick auf das längerfristige Ziel: die Erarbeitung eines Handbuchs der Geschichte der deutschsprachigen Nordeuropa-Forschung. Neben den individuellen Beiträgen wollen wir die Konzeption eines solchen Handbuchs voranbringen.
Seit Jahrhunderten beschäftigen sich deutsche Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler mit dem Norden. Zu einer Disziplin wurde die Nordische Philologie (Nordistik/ Skandinavistik) im Laufe des 19. und vor allem des 20. Jahrhunderts. Mit der Institutionalisierung der Nordistik, Finnlandkunde und weiterer verwandter Fächer im 20. Jahrhundert begann die Nordeuropa-Forschung, sich zu diversifizieren und war einer Reihe politischer Herausforderungen ausgesetzt. Debatten wie die Auseinandersetzung mit der Landeskunde führten zu einer Erweiterung des Fachs. Eine Reihe von Untersuchungen zu einzelnen Personen, Instituten und Teilaspekten liegt vor, doch wiederholt sind zahlreiche Desiderate auf dem Gebiet der Fachgeschichte der deutschsprachigen Forschung und Lehre über Nordeuropa bemängelt worden.
Wir laden zu Beiträgen aus allen Disziplinen ein, in denen über Nordeuropa geforscht wird, insbesondere auch aus den Geschichts-, Sozial- und Rechtswissenschaften (die beim ersten Workshop kein so starkes Gewicht besaßen), aber auch aus anderen Fächern und Forschungsmilieus. Die Tagung hat einen dezidierten Werkstattcharakter, unfertige Arbeiten und die Präsentation erster Ideen werden deshalb durchaus ihren Platz haben.
Ihr Vortrag sollte eine maximale Länge von 15 Minuten nicht überschreiten, da es nicht um erschöpfende Gesamtdarstellungen geht, sondern um Skizzen, kurze Überblicke und Berichte über laufende Forschungen. Als Konferenzsprachen sind Deutsch, Englisch und die skandinavischen Sprachen möglich.

20 years of cooperation in the Baltic Sea Region The Baltic Sea Region experienced profound change after the transformation of the political landscape in Central and Eastern Europe towards the end of the 20th century. After the end of the East-West conflict, the Baltic has evolved from a "Sea of Confrontation" to a "Sea of Cooperation". One particularly important step towards this development was the establishment of the Council of the Baltic Sea States in 1992. 20 years later, a dense network of various organisations and initiatives stretches across the Baltic. The EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region shall contribute to more intensive cooperation between the Baltic countries, shaping the region into a regional cooperation model for Europe. The Baltic Media Forum 2012 will assess the situation following two decades of cooperation in the Baltic Sea Region and discuss the prospects and challenges for future collaboration. "In der Winterschule soll es darum gehen, renommierte Fachgelehrte aus dem Bereich der Hanse- und Regionalgeschichtsforschung mit angehenden Wissenschaftlern der Geschichte, Sprachgeschichte, Kunstgeschichte, Archäologie und Didaktik/Museologie an einem Ort zusammenzuführen und miteinander ins Gespräch zu bringen. Mittels Impulsreferaten sollen die Experten den momentanen Wissens- und Forschungsstand ihres jeweiligen Fachbereichs offenlegen und zudem künftige Perspektiven desselben aufzeigen. In anschließenden Gesprächsrunden sollen die Teilnehmer der Winterschule ihre eigenen Projekte vorstellen, worüber dann im Anschluss mit den Fachexperten intensiv diskutiert werden soll. Die Winterschule dient auch der eigenen Vernetzung der Studierenden und Doktoranden, die sich über ihre laufenden Nachwuchsarbeiten informieren und über die jeweiligen Erfahrungen bzw. 38 Jahre ist es her, dass das Übereinkommen zum Schutz der Ostsee unterzeichnet wurde, aus dem die Helsinki Commission (HELCOM) hervorgegangen ist. 20 Jahre wird der Ostseerat alt. Drei Jahre sind vergangen, seit die Europäische Union die Ostseestrategie verabschiedet hat, die die Zusammenarbeit in der Ostseeregion verstärken und verbessern soll. Was ist seitdem geschehen, wie entwickelt sich die Region rund um das gemeinsame Meer?

Die Europäische Akademie Berlin möchte in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Ostseerat, dem Baltic Sea Forum und der Academia Baltica in einem Seminar vom 5. bis 7. März 2012 analysieren, was sich seitdem verändert hat, wo es bei der Umsetzung der Strategie Defizite gibt und welche Maßnahmen in den nächsten Jahren ergriffen werden müssen, um die Ziele der EU-Ostseestrategie – Prosperität der Region, bessere Erreichbarkeit, Umweltschutz, Sicherheit – zu erreichen.

On March 29- 30, 2012, a conference „Community- based oral history dialogue” will take place in Riga.
The Conference is organised by the National Oral History Centre ( NMVC) in cooperation with the Latvian Oral History Association „ LifeStory” and the Departament of History of Stockholm University.
Conference is devoted to the methodologies of biographical, life narrative, and oral history research, with particular attention to public involvement in the research process– from the gathering of sources to the dissemination of results. Special emphasis will be also put on the subject of dialogue and social interaction within emigrant communities as well as on their interaction with the host country and the country of origin.
Topics for presentations will include research ethics, the connection of oral history to topical and socially sensitive issues and cultural values, as well as innovative forms of publications and projects for public audiences.
A number of well- known authorities in the field, such as Inta Gale- Carpenter from Indiana University Bloomington ( USA) and Robert Miller from Queen’s University Belfast ( Northern Ireland), have confirmed their participation in the conference, and over 30 speakers from Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Poland, United Kingdom, Germany and Lapland have sent their applications.

The 11th International Conference of Nordic and General Linguistics, organized under the auspices of the Nordic Association of Linguists, will take place at Freiburg University April 18th-20th, 2012. The ICNGL conference series provides an open forum for linguistic research in order to facilitate the exchange of ideas on Nordic (including Germanic, Finnic, Saamic and Greenlandic) and other languages, between researchers from the Nordic countries and elsewhere. Its main goals are to create and strengthen connections between researchers working on different languages, with different methodological and theoretical approaches. The Freiburg conference will have a special focus on language contact.

The Nordic Association of Linguists (NAL) is a major forum for linguists working in a Nordic country and linguists elsewhere working on a Nordic language. Two series of international conferences are organized under the auspices of NAL: The Scandinavian Conference of Linguistics and the International Conference on Nordic and General Linguistics, the latter series traditionally with an emphasis on the Nordic languages.

In keeping with the goals of the conference series, we invite abstracts for 20-minute papers or for posters on research topics in Nordic and General linguistics. We especially welcome papers relating to the conference topic of language contact in the Nordic area or concerning Nordic languages elsewhere, but also encourage submissions on issues such as 1) field linguistics, 2) areal typology, 3) grammaticalization, 4) pragmatics, 5) intercomprehension, and 6) innovative methodologies. Middelaldertekster, som eddadikt, Snorre-Edda og sagaer, er våre viktigste kilder til tidlig religionsutøvelse i Norden. Svakheten med dem er velkjente, både med hensyn til den tid de ble skrevet ned og senere kopiert i, og dessuten ofte med en ukjent agenda og fra et kristent perspektiv. Likevel har det knapt funnes alternativer. De samtidige tekstene er få, kult og religion var lenge lite påaktet innenfor arkeologi, og stedsnavn var lenge av mange avvist som kilde til kult. Dette har nå endret seg. Gjennom de siste 10-20 år har stedsnavn­forskningen blitt rehabilitert der den før var avvist, arkeologer har gjort en rekke funn som gir helt sentral, ny kunnskap om religiøs kult i vikingtiden, og landskapsstudier er blitt viktigere.
På denne konferansen vil fokus være på stedsnavn, arkeologiske kilder og landskap, gjerne med en kobling mellom disse kildene innbyrdes og mellom dem og de skriftlige kildene. Spørsmålene er kompliserte og krever en tverrfaglig tilnærming, og på konferansen blir det presentert bidrag fra arkeologer, navneforskere, norrønfilologer og religionshistorikere. Konferansespråket blir i hovedsak skandinavisk.

Konferansen vil finne sted på Brakanes hotell, Ulvik i Hardanger (www.brakanes-hotel.no). Pris per person tirsdag til torsdag i standard enkeltrom med fullpensjon er NOK 2.720,-.

The conference is aimed at MA and PhD students, post docs and young researchers in linguistics with interests in language contact related topics, areal linguistics and typology. We see this gathering as an international meeting place for young linguists who share similar research interests in areal linguistics, language contact, or happen to work on the same languages.

We invite talks of 20 minutes dealing with research topics in accord with the following themes:
- Contact-induced phonological, morphological, syntactic and lexical change
- Lexical and grammatical replication, shared grammaticalization
- Typological investigations and wider perspectives on linguistic areas
- Circum-Baltic languages in general
- Language contact and sociolinguistics

"Supernatural Places" is the topic of the Nordic-Celtic-Baltic folklore symposium in 2012, organised by the Department of Estonian and Comparative Folklore and the Department of Scandinavian Studies, University of Tartu. Participants will be given 20 minutes for their presentations, followed by 10 minutes for questions and discussion. The choice of language should be made by the participant: we kindly ask you to aim to an optimal comprehension of your presentation.

Whereas cultural inequalities and variations in terms of time, space, and social position are among the basic concerns of the disciplines of ethnology and folkloristics, the main focus of The 32nd Nordic Conference of Ethnology and Folkloristics, taking place in Bergen 18-21 June 2012, will be on Dynamics of Cultural Differences.
Variations among individuals and groups are culturally experienced and transmitted in terms of criteria of gender, age, ethnicity, and social background.
In studying the processes, the researcher may need to address even concepts of transition, hybridity, and impure or ambiguous categories.
Research perspectives undergo change and thereby also the definitions of categories of research endeavours. The discussion of modernity is but one illustration of how conceptions of tradition, cultural inheritance, and history were transformed and led to radically new perspectives on themes such as cultural inequality. Similarly, the study of cultural variation may be posited in a perspective of research history: In what ways do contemporary exchanges within the research community yield new dimensions of understanding in the study of cultural variation?
As cultural diversity is expressed through a multiplicity of material, narrative, ritual, and visual modes, we would like to invite participants to address the questions of what inequalities are at play at any time and how variations become subject of manifestation and modification.

On July 6–8, 2012, the National Library of Serbia in Belgrad will host the eighth International Workshop on Balto-Slavic Accentology (IWoBA VIII).

Topics of the conference will be issues in comparative and Balto-Slavic accentology, including both the prehistory and history of particular Baltio-Slavic languages, as well as dealing with dialectology (both historical and contemporary), Indo-European accentology and prosody.

The general theme of the conference will be Sagas and the use of the past, and the aim of the conference is to clarify some of the problems arising when literature tries to describe a distant past. It is obvious that whether Old Norse texts are read as literature or as sources for past periods, it is necessary to appreciate that the texts that constitute the saga genre are both a consideration of the past as well as of the contemporary situation. This workshop at the 45th Annual Meeting of the Societas Linguistica Europaea in Stockholm will focus on the Baltic language group (Lithuanian, Latvian, Latgalian, Old Prussian and their dialects) and specifically on the assessment of the Baltic material from a broader European areal perspective, including, but not limited to the Circum-Baltic region, serving as a buffer zone between Eurasia and Standard-Average European.
The workshop is intended to be a forum where scholars working on Baltic languages can discuss various problems relating to the study of these languages from a broader geographical, typological and theoretical perspective. Its goal is to bridge the gap between the study of Baltic languages and current trends in linguistic theory and language typology and last but not least to attract attention of the linguistic community to this rich and yet not fully investigated group of languages.

The workshop will cover the following major research areas with reference to the Baltic languages:
- contact linguistics and areal typology;
- broader typological studies with focus on Baltic languages;
- contrastive linguistics;
- theoretical approaches to Baltic languages.

We would like to suggest those colleagues who would be interested in participation but have not submitted their provisional abstracts by the early deadline announced in October to consider submitting an abstract by the general SLE deadline January 15th 2012. The Doctoral Students of DFG International Research Training Group "Baltic Borderlands" are pleased to announce the Baltic Borderlands Conference 2012, taking to be place in Greifswald from 20th to 22nd of September.

From the beginning of mankind water has played an essential role by dividing and connecting different landscapes, peoples, cultures and identities. Although water has been the object of research in studies on maritime borders, dimensions of inclusion and exclusion that go beyond the mere physical character of water seem to have often been neglected.
This interdisciplinary conference intends to approach water beyond its immanent quality as a physical boundary and focuses on the character of water as a means of social, cultural, political or economic division and connection. The aim of the conference is to discuss the different roles and functions ascribed to water and what we can learn about social and mental boundaries through engaging with it.

Central topics of the conference:
- the changing meaning and functional transformation of water as barrier and bridge
- water bodies (oceans, lakes, rivers) as historical physical borders and mental boundaries
- water bodies as extra legal spaces (piracy, smuggling, human trafficking)
- water as a resource (food, fishery, agriculture)
- social and political dimensions of water as a source for conflict and cooperation
- water in culture, fine arts and religion
- the governance of water bodies and their legal status
- water and mobility (trade, transportation, tourism)

Requirements, deadlines and organizational questions:
We invite senior scholars, young researchers (recent Ph.Ds and Post-Docs) and doctoral students from the fields of Anthropology, Baltic Studies, Cultural and Area Studies, Geography, History, Literature, Political Science/International Relations, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, Theology as well as neighbouring disciplines to submit paper proposals. After its initial successes in Aalborg, Denmark, in November 2010, NORDISCO is emerging as a biennial event, whose goal is to create a Nordic and Baltic forum bringing together researchers and doctoral students who are investigating discourse and interaction from a wide range of disciplinary perspectives. It is now our pleasure at Linköping University, Sweden, to host NORDISCO 2012, in the hope that the second Nordic and Baltic interdisciplinary conference will give rise to creative synergies and facilitate new networks, crossing both geographical and disciplinary borders.
The focus of the conference is on the organisation, structure and constitution of text, discourse, talk and social interaction. We therefore welcome researchers’ contributions from different and diverse fields of enquiry, including – but not limited to – discourse studies, conversation analysis, discursive psychology, critical discourse analysis, interaction analysis, rhetoric, narrative analysis, discourse theory, political discourse analysis, social semiotics, multimodal discourse analysis, applied linguistics, gesture studies and communication activism, as well as approaches to discourse and interaction to be found in sociology, political science, environmental science, economics, media studies and cultural studies.
The conference will consist of parallel paper sessions and four plenary presentations by leading researchers representing different domains of study. We are happy to be able to confirm plenaries by Anssi Peräkylä (Helsinki), Elizabeth Lanza (Oslo), Inger Lassen (Aalborg), and Jan Anward (Linköping). As a special pre-conference event in the morning before the official conference, there will also be four workshops, organised by our plenary speakers.
