vifanord - Virtual Library of Northern European and Baltic Studies serves as a
central collection and internet guide of scientific information on this cultural region. Specific topics in Polish or Russian affairs can be found via
» ViFaOst resp.
» Slavistics-Portal.
It leads to
sources from thematically relevant libraries in a wide range of international institutions, to books, articles and other source types, as well as it hosts a specially collected and constantly growing
database of academically valuable documents from the internet which are peer reviewed and classified by specialized scholars, refined with keywords and abstracts to give the researcher precise information to the depth needed.
The
regional scope streches from Iceland and the Faroe Islands in the west to Estonia in the east and from (Norwegian) Svalbard in the north to the Danish-German border in the south, including Baltic Sea cultural studies and Hanseatic topics.
vifanord is a
joint development of three major German academic libraries with traditional competences in Northern European and Baltic Studies: Greifswald University Library (of 1604), Kiel University Library (of 1665) and Göttingen State and University Library (of 1737) in cooperation with several partner institutions.
vifanord as a virtual library started in 2006 with the financial support of the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft DFG). It also incorporates the former Virtual Library on Baltic Cultural Studies “baltica-net”.
Further options and functionalities are
under construction or in planning.
